Is Human Sexuality important?

Linggo, Setyembre 26, 2010

Human sexuality, what do we really mean by human sexuality?

Well, according to the speakers yesterday at the talk about human sexuality, human sexuality isn’t all about expressing ourselves as sexual beings but also about whom we really are as persons. It was stressed that our gender greatly affects our human sexuality.  It was also said that there are four genders, they are the male, female, effeminate, and the lesbians. It was also mentioned that there are only two sexes; they are the male, and female.

The talk was also about teenage pregnancies. It was stressed out in the talk that nowadays there are many teenage pregnancies; so we may think of it as normal and usual, that’s why the speakers informed us about the different disadvantages in teenage pregnancies. They also told us the most effective answers to people who pressure us to have sexual intercourse with them and it seemed quite right. The speakers asked some of us what we would answer to the different pressure questions and it was seen that most of us don’t know what to say yet. So I think that what the speakers taught will be very useful to us in the future. But some of the things that the speakers taught us were already common sense because it was really easy and I think that those parts of the talk were useless because they should have focused on some other serious stuff. J They also showed us some clips showing the effects of giving in to temptation and one clip showing a woman giving birth which was really unnecessary for me to see. J While they were showing the clip of the woman giving birth to a child everybody started screaming, laughing and some covered their eyes (including myself of course). I think that this was our reaction because we aren’t as educated as we thought we were but I also believe that these were our reactions because we didn’t fully understand what giving birth means. Maybe some of us just thought of it as bringing new life to the world but as what we’ve seen during the talk giving birth is more than just providing life but it is also the courage and strength of the mother to carry a child and bring it out. I believe that giving birth is probably a very painful thing that a woman has to go through but I also believe that after the pain comes joy because my mother once said to me that yes, pregnancy is difficult but it is worth it because once the pain is over you will feel overwhelmed and you will be the happiest person in the planet. J

Some parts of the talk were very boring especially the second part because the speaker wasn’t as fun as the first one. J

But all in all I think that what the speakers told, taught and showed us is really going to be a help for us someday. I also think that what they said during the talk affected each and every third year student there even if some were only making jokes or just laughing.

As young Louisians it is but right for us to control our raging emotions and contain ourselves. I think that before we do things we should always think about other people first and we should always take into consideration the consequences of our actions. I believe that rushing things leads to no good and it would lead to the destruction of the person or the people involved. I know that if we wait for the right time we will realize that we will be really successful in the things that we would want to accomplish and we will please the people we want to.

Wait for the right time because it’s worth it. J

Mitchell Besser: Mothers helping mothers fight HIV

Human immunodeficiency virus or commonly known as HIV is affecting a huge number of people in the world especially in sub-Saharan Africa. There are many mothers affected with HIV in Africa but there are only few who have the courage to fight this disease.

In the talk, Mitchell Besser, a graduate of medicine from the Harvard University said that HIV is stigmatizing. According to him HIV is not only a medical issue but also a social issue. I believe that he said this because if you’re an HIV positive you may be thrown out or condemned by many people even your family. There are 33 million HIV positive people in the whole world and two thirds of these people belong to Africa specifically the sub-Saharan region. By giving medicine to these people infected with this virus there will be a huge decline in their number. This was tested and proven as stated by Mitchell Besser because according to him there was an eighty percent decline in the number of HIV positive people because of the treatments and medicine given to them. In the talk, Mitchell Besser showed a picture of the world and in that picture it was focused on Africa because of its huge number of HIV positive people. In the second picture Africa was also very eye catchy because of its smallness. The smallness of Africa symbolized that there are very few doctors there that could offer cure or treatment compared to the other countries which has enough doctors to cover their population.

HIV positive mothers in Africa were also called as mentor mothers because they also help other people especially mothers who have HIV. These mentor mothers are being taught by other doctors on how to communicate with other HIV positive people and on how to help them feel hope. They discovered or invented this concept of mentor mothers because there are very few doctors and nurses in Africa that can accommodate the patients and also because of the experience of these mentor mothers. By having an HIV positive person as your mentor can make an HIV positive person feel comfortable because the person they are talking to can relate with them because they also have undergone through the same experience.

There are three main goals of the doctors, nurses, and mentor mothers. First is the PMTCT or the prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV. Second is to keep mothers and children healthy, to keep them away from harm, diseases and others. The third one is the empowerment of women in the society.

How do they plan to accomplish these goals? They actually thought of 4 steps.
1.) See the patients one-on-one
     - I think that this is quite a good idea because some people aren’t comfortable with talking about their problems in front of many people.
2.) Try to bring in the partners or husbands
     - The goal of this is to involve the partners in the treatment and to see if they have been infected too by this virus.
3.) Work in groups
     - This is also important because by coming together they can share experience and they can discuss solutions on how to deal with these problems.
4.) Community outreach
     - By conducting community outreach programs they can change the community’s beliefs and they can give the people hope.

Three levels of impact:
1.) Mothers and babies
     - Attention is given most to the mothers and children because they should be given a chance to live especially the babies and the babies need their mothers to live.
2.) Communities
     - The communities are also given attention because if one member of the community is affected then the other community members can also be easily infected.
3.) Health care systems
     - The different health care systems should always be updated so that will know what preventive measures they can do.

Hope for the best!
There should always be hope. We should always hope for the best and we should always have faith in the Lord because nothing is impossible with God.

Buto’t balat!

My favorite restaurant is buto’t balat even if it’s located in Ilo-Ilo. I first tasted the delicious foods of buto’t balat when we went to Ilo-Ilo last summer. When we were at Ilo-Ilo I and my sister insisted that we eat at Jollibee or McDonalds but our tito said that Buto’t balat is the best restaurant there so we tried it. J
At first I didn’t want to go there because I wanted to eat somewhere else but when we were there I was astonished at how elegant the place was. The restaurant has the best setting I have ever seen in my life so far. J It was really calming and relaxing there. I can feel the fresh air touch my face and the sweet sunlight on my body. J The ambiance was really nice when we were there.
Buto’t balat restaurant offers many kinds of delicacies. There were many choices available and I know for sure that all of the foods there are delicious! J

My favorite food is the baby back ribs. I first tasted this at Buto’t Balat. This is my favorite food because it’s so far the best food I have ever eaten. Its smell can hypnotize you and its look will make you want to forget that you’re on a diet. J Its sauce completes the taste. This food is very pleasing to eat because first of all it’s soft and it’s very satisfying. J You can’t explain its taste because once you eat it you will be very overwhelmed by it and it makes you forget everything including your name. J I also consider this as one of my favorites because it’s for all seasons you can eat it in birthdays, weddings, and many other occasions you can think of because its taste is for everyone. J To taste the best baby back ribs go to Buto’t Balat where everything is nice.

YUM! Ice cream my favorite dessert on the planet! I love ice cream it gives me a soft feeling. It’s ironic actually because ice cream makes me feel warm and ice cream is freezing cold. J It actually helps me in my emotions and problems. I specifically love the cheese and cookies n’ cream flavors. The reason why I love cheese ice cream because of its tiny bits of cheese which is my favorite part to eat because its very DELICIOUS! Needless to say it actually makes my day complete. J Ice cream is actually one solution to my problems. Well, not actually a solution but it helps me cope up with my problems in life. When I eat ice cream it makes me forget my queries and it makes me just want to have fun and think about nothing else which the best feeling for me is especially when I’m stressed and pressured. I actually don’t get people who don’t like ice cream I mean what’s there to not like? Its actually for everybody.  J

Oh food, don’t ever leave me because I can never live without you! I heart you <3 I believe that food solves almost anything. It makes you happy, satisfied, kind, and many more. What else can you ask for?

Education

Sabado, Setyembre 18, 2010
Ten Point Agenda on Educational Reform

• Increasing the education budget to 4 percent of the gross national product to make it at par with other countries.
Hooray to that! I think that this is a really great project and that this would benefit our country especially us, students. I always thought that the budget of the Department of Education should be high because it is a very important department in our country. It controls the different factors that affect the education of a student. I believe that giving more budget to the DepEd would accomplish many things and many projects that they intend to do.

• Enhancing basic education by adding two more years to it.
I’m sure that the officials proposed this because they think that its what’s best for the students and the status of the country. But I, personally don’t agree to this because I think that there would be only a little difference in the knowledge of a student even if we would have one more year added to our high school education. Rather than adding more years in the primary and secondary education the officials should focus more on employing efficient and the proper people who could accomplish their job as a teacher who can teach the students what they really need to learn.

• Promoting academic excellence by developing globally benchmarked standards of excellence.
I personally think that this can help the status of the country and make Philippines more known worldwide as a country offering great education. By promoting this I believe that our country would produce excellent people that would make a difference someday.

• Developing community ownership of schools.
I’m 50-50 on this one because for me, there are pros and cons in this issue. First of all by developing this there would be savings in the local authority and this will be very effective if combined with transparency and accountability. The disadvantage of this is that some people in the community would take advantage and many people would be very involved with some school issues.

• Ensuring universal access to education.
This is actually a great move, not only does this show equality but it also acknowledges everybody. By giving all people the ability to experience education no matter what their religion is, what their social status is and what physical disabilities they may have it would show that we respect everyone no matter what kind of person they are.

• Strengthening higher education.
I personally agree to this project because higher education plays a huge role in the economic status of the country. By strengthening this, I believe that this would make our country more progressive.

• Empowering teachers.
I believe that this is a good idea, I think that giving the teachers right to impose policies, give school goals and let them exercise their right to teach what they think is right and proper may benefit the school and may even benefit the country.

• Building transparency and accountability.
I think that this is really good because with this, people can understand others well. Transparency is letting a person know important things that concern them that’s why by building this, there will be no misunderstandings and there will be unity within the community.  Accountability is by being responsible to whatever happens to the people within your jurisdiction. By strengthening the accountability of the leaders there will be a harmonious working relationship between and among the people.

• Supporting private education.
I think that this is actually good because by supporting private education, students will be more knowledgeable and efficient. By doing this our country would produce more intelligent and ethical people that would give pride to us and our country.

• Maximizing alternative learning.
Well, first of all alternative learning is a kind of learning that deviates from the traditional way of learning. Alternative learning is an ideal way of learning because this kind of education caters to very few members of students. In this case, a sort of one-on-one learning takes place. But it is not practical in the Philippine setting because this is only for people who can afford private tutors. I think that this is a good project but it would really cost money.

simply me and green and blue:)

We are often struck by the question “who are you?” or by the phrase “describe yourself” but do we really know what to say or do we just make up some things so that our answer would be great or to just please others?

Personally, I think that this is very hard to answer because I haven’t fully discovered myself. At this point in my life, this is who I am.

I am Lycon Soliba and I am a third year high school student at Saint Louis University. I live in the huge and beautiful city of Baguio, Philippines. I’m a writer and a loud person and I am just a dot in the world. J

I’m very friendly and sociable but I can also be really shy sometimes especially if it involves performing in front of many people. I find talking in front of a crowd difficult because I feel all the eyes looking at me and I would feel pressured and light-headed. I’m always kind around everybody especially if you’re kind to me too. I’m good friend or I think I am. :D I feel really bad when people are mad at me especially when my friends are.

I love watching basketball games especially the NBA. I personally am a fan of the Boston Celtics specifically Rajon Rondo. I think that he’s a great point-guard and an excellent basketball player. J I believe that they will be the champions. J My favorite thing to do is to hang out with my friends and just have fun without worrying about a thing. I’m also a fan of Ne-yo’s music because I like R&B. I like watching movies and I am always looking forward to great ones. I also like watching series like CSI, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy etc.

I hate people who lie just to cover up their mistakes. I also hate people who talk “shit” about me behind my back and people who pretend to be someone else just to fit in or to belong. I personally hate people who only come to you if they need help.

I have many goals and aspirations in life that’s why I always lay out my priorities. On top of my priorities is God of course next is my family and friends then followed by my studies.

I believe that you should always live your life to the fullest, laugh out loud, and put your worries aside because life’s too short to drown yourself in tears.

My blog, green and blue is all about many things. It contains different information about me, about some latest issues, and about the different things happening in this world. It is filled with my opinions and my points of view on different topics.

My blog is entitled green and blue because first of all these two are my favorite colors. J Green is associated with life and I believe that when it’s green its life while blue is associated with intelligence and if combined with patience and determination it will become a great factor in achieving your ambitions.
