Ten Point Agenda on Educational Reform
• Increasing the education budget to 4 percent of the gross national product to make it at par with other countries.
Hooray to that! I think that this is a really great project and that this would benefit our country especially us, students. I always thought that the budget of the Department of Education should be high because it is a very important department in our country. It controls the different factors that affect the education of a student. I believe that giving more budget to the DepEd would accomplish many things and many projects that they intend to do.
• Enhancing basic education by adding two more years to it.
I’m sure that the officials proposed this because they think that its what’s best for the students and the status of the country. But I, personally don’t agree to this because I think that there would be only a little difference in the knowledge of a student even if we would have one more year added to our high school education. Rather than adding more years in the primary and secondary education the officials should focus more on employing efficient and the proper people who could accomplish their job as a teacher who can teach the students what they really need to learn.
• Promoting academic excellence by developing globally benchmarked standards of excellence. I personally think that this can help the status of the country and make Philippines more known worldwide as a country offering great education. By promoting this I believe that our country would produce excellent people that would make a difference someday.
• Developing community ownership of schools. I’m 50-50 on this one because for me, there are pros and cons in this issue. First of all by developing this there would be savings in the local authority and this will be very effective if combined with transparency and accountability. The disadvantage of this is that some people in the community would take advantage and many people would be very involved with some school issues.
• Ensuring universal access to education.
This is actually a great move, not only does this show equality but it also acknowledges everybody. By giving all people the ability to experience education no matter what their religion is, what their social status is and what physical disabilities they may have it would show that we respect everyone no matter what kind of person they are.
• Strengthening higher education.
I personally agree to this project because higher education plays a huge role in the economic status of the country. By strengthening this, I believe that this would make our country more progressive.
• Empowering teachers.
I believe that this is a good idea, I think that giving the teachers right to impose policies, give school goals and let them exercise their right to teach what they think is right and proper may benefit the school and may even benefit the country.
• Building transparency and accountability.
I think that this is really good because with this, people can understand others well. Transparency is letting a person know important things that concern them that’s why by building this, there will be no misunderstandings and there will be unity within the community. Accountability is by being responsible to whatever happens to the people within your jurisdiction. By strengthening the accountability of the leaders there will be a harmonious working relationship between and among the people.
• Supporting private education.
I think that this is actually good because by supporting private education, students will be more knowledgeable and efficient. By doing this our country would produce more intelligent and ethical people that would give pride to us and our country.
• Maximizing alternative learning.
Well, first of all alternative learning is a kind of learning that deviates from the traditional way of learning. Alternative learning is an ideal way of learning because this kind of education caters to very few members of students. In this case, a sort of one-on-one learning takes place. But it is not practical in the Philippine setting because this is only for people who can afford private tutors. I think that this is a good project but it would really cost money.
